Hiram W and Mary Marsila Valentine-Powell Log House
Hiram W and Mary Marsila Valentine-Powell Log House
Powell Log House

Original site approximately two miles west of present location on the Union Line Road, northwest of Soso, MS. Now located between the Old United Methodist Church building and Union Line Club House on Union Line Road.

Remains of original log house of Hiram Washington Powell and Mary Marsila Valentine Powell. Built 1852, it was here that Mary died of starvation on 17 Jan 1863 while Hiram was away fighting for the Confederacy during the Civil War. She left behind five young children ages 2-9.

Original site approximately two miles west of present location on the Union Line Road, northwest of Soso, MS. Now located between the Old United Methodist Church building and Union Line Club House on Union Line Road.

This was originally a "double pen-dog trot house with upstairs used as a sleeping loft for the children prior to movement to its present site. All that remains of the original house is its main building which measures 18 ft x 24 ft and housed upstairs sleeping quarters. Split wood framing is the only indication of a fireplace that once warmed the family.

House is presently owned by Mrs. Herman (Martha Doris Jefcoat) Welborn and Mr. and Mrs. Donice Jefcoat.
