Rachel’s Children Fathered by Jesse Davis Knight
Slaves had few legal rights, least of all to marry and have children. Just two years after arriving on Jackie Knight’s place, Rachel became the slave mistress of his son, Jesse Davis Knight. Illicit interracial se xual relationships were not unusual in the antebellum South in the late e ighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Jesse Davis Knight’s liaison w ith Rachel resulted in the birth of three known children: Jeffery Earle y, Edmund, and Frances.
Early in 1858, Rachel gave birth to a son, her third child. Jeffery Earley was born a slave, owned by his grandfather, John “Jackie” Knight. B y law, the status of the mother determined the status of the children, s o Rachel and her children were his property. After slavery, while still a t eenager, Jeffery married Martha Ann Eliza Jane, “Mollie,” the daughter o f Serena and Newton Knight. The rumor mill started immediately, with cl aims that Newt forced his daughter to marry the former slave boy who in p hysical appearance was nearly white and who after all shared the same g randfather. To local whites it was just impossible for a white girl to b ecome attracted to and fall in love with a Negro; however, to the famil y this was just the case. Jeffery and Mollie had grown up working and p laying together on Newton’s farm. Newton was well aware of this, and so he determined to erase any vestige of Negro in both Rachel’s and George A nn’s children.

Rachel Knight the daughter of Abraham & Viny was born March 1849 in Macon, Bibb County, GA. She was a slave, owned by John "Jackie" Knight. Rachel died February 11, 1899 in Jasper County, Mississippi. Rachel is buried at the Knight Cemetery, in Jasper Co., MS.

See the photo of her headstone in the Knight Cemetery.

In the 1860 Covington Co., MS Slave Schedule John Knight owned 22 slaves.

Rachel is listed in the 1870 Jasper Co., MS Census with her children

Rachel age 30

Rachel and her children are living next door to Newton Knight (son of John "Jackie" Knight & Keziah Davis) & his wife Serena Knight. Rachel has a personal estate value of $50.00. She is listed as black and being born in Mississippi. All her children are listed as "mulatto" and born in Mississippi.

Rachel is listed in the 1880 Jasper Co., MS Census with her children
Per 1880 Census - Jasper County,
Rachel age 40

The children living in her household are listed "mulatto." Her oldest child George Ann is listed as born in Georgia. All the other children are born in Mississippi.

Jesse D. Knight was the father of three of Rachel's children: Jeffery, Fannie and Edmund. In his will dated Setember 4, 1860, John "Jackie" Knight" bequeathed Rachel to his son Jesse D. Knight. The Will reads as follows: "...and to my son, Jesse D. Knight I do will and bequeath a certain Negro woman named Rachel and Jeffrey, her child with her increase, if any, on his paying to each of the heirs of my son, Benjamin Knight, deceased...." [The Family of John 'Jackie' Knight and Keziah Davis Knight, 1773 - 1985. Printed by Robert and Delores Knight Vinson in Magee, MS 1985].

According to Sondra Yvonne Bivins, shortly after Winifred Alma "Peggy" Schulz and Hollis' marriage, Hollis' mother, Ollie Knight Smith, traveled by train to visit Hollis and Peg at his invitation. When Peg discovered that Aunt Ollie was coming, they met the train, visited with her until the next train back to New Orleans arrived, put Aunt Ollie on the train and sent her home. Peg was terrified that someone would find out that Hollis had black blood.

Bertha Mariah Thornton Kemp was my grandmother. I never knew her as she did when my mother was a small child. She had a son who died in June 1927 at the age of about six months and was buried here. She died six months later and they buried her with the baby. John Kemp paid for these burials with a calf and $15 according to the cemetery records. I had the headstone placed on her gravesite because she'd never had one. Left by her granddaughter on 13 Apr 2015.

Biography

BELOVED MOTHER BARBARA NELL WILLIAMS
(A.K.A. Grandbobbie, by family and friends)

Barbara began her journey into this life on September 2, 1929. She was born to the union of Liley Crosby and Donia Keys in Soso (Covington), Mississippi. She was the youngest of fifteen children, all of whom preceded her in death. Upon the death of her mother, she and her father lived with various family members. They eventually moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where she resided with her brother and sister-in-law, Ezelle and Idella Crosby.

She met and married William Pruitt, Sr. and to this union, thirteen children were born. She later married Earrie Williams in Centreville, Illinois and two cherished sisters were added to the family.

Claiming Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age while still in Mississippi, she rededicated her life to Christ and was baptized at Full Gospel Church of God in Christ, in Centreville, Illinois. She remained a faithful member there for more than fifty years. She was a loyal worker in the church and served as choir president, piano and organ player, Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School teacher. Along with her own children, she brought many other of their friend's children to church on a regular basis.

Having her education interrupted to raise her children, she decided to study to receive her G.E.D. diploma when she was approximately fifty years old. With her diploma in hand, she began working at St. Clair County Housing Authority as a maintenance worker until she retired.

Among her many hobbies were gardening, sewing, and cooking. Her other passion was fishing. Grandbobbie cared for many family and friends’ children, as many as five at a time, in addition to her own children. Never being able to see anyone hungry, she fed many friends as well as strangers.

Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents; five of her children, Michael, Arvelle, Ronald, William Jr., and Christian; as well as both husbands, William Pruitt, Sr. and Earrie Williams.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Lorraine Harper (Lloyd) Swansea, IL, William Pruitt, Jr. (Renee) of Swansea, IL, Elaine Harmon of Centreville, IL, Patricia (Oliver) Fallon of Alorton, IL, Jo Etta Pruitt of Centreville, IL, Frederick Pruitt of Alorton, IL, Angela (James) Hurt of O’Fallon, IL, Melody Pruitt and Stephen Pruitt, both of Cahokia, IL, Vontisha Williams and Miki Williams, both of Centreville, IL; daughters-in-law, Ann, Dorothy, Jeraldine and Renee; in-laws, Shirley Moore, Idella Crosby and Elbert (Doris) Acoff, all of St. Louis, MO; a loving grandson, Chris Relford; a loving self-proclaimed daughter, Janine McMath; a total of more than 130 grand, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bobby C. Musgrove, 75, was the youngest of 11 children to the late William L. and Elma K. Musgrove, He married Maxine on May 25, 1957, in Danville.

Bobby is survived by his loving wife, daughter, Barbara Musgrove (Mark Prieto), two sons, Bill (Alicia) Musgrove and Robert (Angie) Musgrove, four grandchildren, a great-grandson, three sisters, Jennie Pace, Carolyn (Fred) Johnson and Janell Holifield and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe, Kellon, Morris and Orvel and sisters, Josephine, Vernice, and Hilanese.

Bobby had a true love and devotion to Maxine and his children. He greatly enjoyed and loved his grandchildren and great-grandchild. Bobby was not a man of many words. To understand Bobby was to understand his thoughts and actions through his quietness. Bobby demonstrated dignity, grace, strength, and tenderness, making him a true role model for his children. He gave so much of himself so often, without expecting anything in return. His easy-going, calm and comforting demeanor made him a true honorable Southern gentleman.

Bobby proudly served in the U.S. Army as an artilleryman. He retired from the VA Hospital after 38 years working primarily as a painter. Bobby is known for his dedication, loyalty, and good work ethic and has received high commendations. He made friends with all who had the pleasure of meeting him. He always offered to help his friends and neighbors without being asked. Bobby's favorite pastime was gardening. He always planted more than what the family needed, and especially loved sharing his bounty with others; the bounty of food and kindness.

Brother Luther & Sister Viola Knight

Brother Luther and Sister Viola deeded the church one (1) acre of land back when the church pioneers were laying out there plans for the church.

Church History of Soso

Our First Church
The Soso Seventh-Seventh-day Adventist Church may have started as early as the late 1800's. The efforts of Brother Holloway, a literature evangelist from Laurel, MS and the untiring efforts of Miss Anna Knight, a recent convert from Gitano, MS in an area known as "Six Town".

Through their effort, the Third Angel's Message was made known to a small group of our chartered members. Worship was held in Bush Harbors during summer months and in individuals homes during the winter months.

The first church was built in 1924. The first pastor was Pastor C.W. Holloway. The fact that he was the first Adventist preacher in Soso was not accepted at first. He was threatened and harassed, but as he began t o preach, the people began to read the Bible and many accepted the truth.

The land where the church is built was deeded to the Louisiana - Mississippi Conference by Brother Luther and Sister Viola Knight. The Louisiana - Mississippi Conference gave $51.00 and the Union Conference gave $ 20.00 toward the building of the church. The total cost of the first church came to $341.00.

The first church school started in 1927. Allen Humphrey was the first teacher. Later came Seneva Crosgrove, Miss. Jones, Mr. Mitchell Palmer, Miss. Hortense Price, Mr. Jackson, Miss. Rose Harris, and Mr. Benjamin Moody. The church school closed in 1956.

From 1898 or 1901 to 1945 Soso was part of the Gulf State Conference. Many important records were lost due to a fire. In 1945 Regional Conferences came on the scene and Soso became a part of the South Central Conference.
