10 | Rachel’s Children Fathered by Jesse Davis Knight Slaves had few legal rights, least of all to marry and have children. Just two years after arriving on Jackie Knight’s place, Rachel became the slave mistress of his son, Jesse Davis Knight. Illicit interracial se xual relationships were not unusual in the antebellum South in the late e ighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Jesse Davis Knight’s liaison w ith Rachel resulted in the birth of three known children: Jeffery Earle y, Edmund, and Frances. Early in 1858, Rachel gave birth to a son, her third child. Jeffery Earley was born a slave, owned by his grandfather, John “Jackie” Knight. B y law, the status of the mother determined the status of the children, s o Rachel and her children were his property. After slavery, while still a t eenager, Jeffery married Martha Ann Eliza Jane, “Mollie,” the daughter o f Serena and Newton Knight. The rumor mill started immediately, with cl aims that Newt forced his daughter to marry the former slave boy who in p hysical appearance was nearly white and who after all shared the same g randfather. To local whites it was just impossible for a white girl to b ecome attracted to and fall in love with a Negro; however, to the famil y this was just the case. Jeffery and Mollie had grown up working and p laying together on Newton’s farm. Newton was well aware of this, and so he determined to erase any vestige of Negro in both Rachel’s and George A nn’s children. Rachel Knight the daughter of Abraham & Viny was born March 1849 in Macon, Bibb County, GA. She was a slave, owned by John "Jackie" Knight. Rachel died February 11, 1899 in Jasper County, Mississippi. Rachel is buried at the Knight Cemetery, in Jasper Co., MS. See the photo of her headstone in the Knight Cemetery. In the 1860 Covington Co., MS Slave Schedule John Knight owned 22 slaves. All the other children are born in Mississippi. Jesse D. Knight was the father of three of Rachel's children: Jeffery, Fannie and Edmund. In his will dated Setember 4, 1860, John "Jackie" Knight" bequeathed Rachel to his son Jesse D. Knight. The Will reads as follows: "...and to my son, Jesse D. Knight I do will and bequeath a certain Negro woman named Rachel and Jeffrey, her child with her increase, if any, on his paying to each of the heirs of my son, Benjamin Knight, deceased...." She was born to the union of Liley Crosby and Donia Keys in Soso (Covington), Mississippi. She was the youngest of fifteen children, all of whom preceded her in death. Upon the death of her mother, she and her father lived with various family members. They eventually moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where she resided with her brother and sister-in-law, Ezelle and Idella Crosby. She met and married William Pruitt, Sr. and to this union, thirteen children were born. She later married Earrie Williams in Centreville, Illinois and two cherished sisters were added to the family. Her other passion was fishing. Grandbobbie cared for many family and friends’ children, as many as five at a time, in addition to her own children. Never being able to see anyone hungry, she fed many friends as well as strangers. Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents; five of her children, Michael, Arvelle, Ronald, William Jr., and Christian; as well as both husbands, William Pruitt, Sr. and Earrie Williams. 41 | Brother Luther & Sister Viola Knight Brother Luther and Sister Viola deeded the church one (1) acre of land back when the church pioneers were laying out there plans for the church. Church History of Soso Our First Church The Soso Seventh-Seventh-day Adventist Church may have started as early as the late 1800's. The efforts of Brother Holloway, a literature evangelist from Laurel, MS and the untiring efforts of Miss Anna Knight, a recent convert from Gitano, MS in an area known as "Six Town". Through their effort, the Third Angel's Message was made known to a small group of our chartered members. Worship was held in Bush Harbors during summer months and in individuals homes during the winter months. The first church was built in 1924. The first pastor was Pastor C.W. Holloway. The fact that he was the first Adventist preacher in Soso was not accepted at first. He was threatened and harassed, but as he began t o preach, the people began to read the Bible and many accepted the truth. The land where the church is built was deeded to the Louisiana - Mississippi Conference by Brother Luther and Sister Viola Knight. The Louisiana - Mississippi Conference gave $51.00 and the Union Conference gave $ 20.00 toward the building of the church. The total cost of the first church came to $341.00. The first church school started in 1927. Allen Humphrey was the first teacher. Later came Seneva Crosgrove, Miss. Jones, Mr. Mitchell Palmer, Miss. Hortense Price, Mr. Jackson, Miss. Rose Harris, and Mr. Benjamin Moody. The church school closed in 1956. From 1898 or 1901 to 1945 Soso was part of the Gulf State Conference. Many important records were lost due to a fire. In 1945 Regional Conferences came on the scene and Soso became a part of the South Central Conference. | Knight, Luther (I406)
