Mrs. Mary Ann Dodds, who was affectionately known as Miss Mary Ann, was born on May 28, 1924 in Benmore, MS to the late Warren Edward Smith, Jr. and Jerolee Ainsworth Smith. When she was five years old, her family moved to the Kelly Settlement near Hattiesburg, MS building a house on Monroe Road.
Miss Mary Ann was the last of nine children. Five sisters: Velma Smith, Casa Smith, Myrtis Smith, Malvolia Hewitt and Mable Fielder along with three brothers: John Melton, Bernice and Marvin Smith who preceded her in death.

She attended school in the Kelly Settlement and completed her high school education at Bay Springs Consolidated High School in 1942 where she was salutatorian of her class.

Early in her life she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined the Apostolic Church under the late Rev. Longino Dahmer. After that church folded she began attending Shady Grove Baptist under the late Rev. Dr. R. W. Woullard, Sr. Before he retired from Shady Grove she was baptized and received the right hand of fellowship serving faithfully until her health began to fail.

During the War, she met Wyatt Chester Dodds of Hazlehurst, Mississippi and they were married on May 24, 1943. To this union was born two daughters. After separation, she devoted her life to raising her daughters sacrificing future relationships for their benefit and protection.

After the death of her father in 1956, Mary Ann was employed by the State Board of Health as a Laboratory Assistant. Believing that this opportunity was indeed a blessing from God, she never missed a day of work nor was ever late to work for 30 years.

Miss Mary Ann loved her children, her family, her church and all of her many friends. She found great joy in her church where she served as Choir Secretary, Sunday school teacher, Mission No.1 teacher, and Financial Secretary. She loved going to the Gospel Chorus Singing Union and looked forward to the weekly Senior Citizens Luncheon.

Mary Ann departed this life on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Wesley Medical Center to join her parents, sisters, brothers and many friends who preceded her in death.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, Alice McInnis is listed as a widow. I wondered what had happen to them since I could never find them in the 1910 Census and it never dawn upon me that Alice had remarried. Therefore, I looked up the names of five of her neighbors from the 1900 Census, that I thought would still be around for the 1910 Census. Between 1900 and 191 0, Jackson County was reconstructed and George County was created, which is where the McInnis lived. After finding two neighbors with the sa me ED # of 141 from the 1900 US Census, I looked up neighbor (Alfred White.) After finding him I begin looking for the McInnis in earnest. When you do this type of research you must keep the whole family in mind . Thumbing through ED # 141, I ran across McKinnis, Monroe and I notice his sisters names were in order, I then notice his mother's first name was correct, but her last name was Brown. Only then did I know I had found them. (It should be noticed that the census takers wrote names based on the way they interpret the pronunciation of what was heard and or they wrote it down to the best of their ability. Also if no one was a t home, perhaps a neighbor gave information on your family.) In the 19 10 Census, it showed her being married to George Brown for nine years. I verified this information by looking in the marriage records. It reveal ed they were married on 13 Jan 1901, by J.J. Fisher and it was recorded i n Book 7, Page 141, by Circuit Clerk Jackson County, W.C. Harris or Havens. George and the children he and Alice had together were listed as mulattos. Their household consist of the following:

The 1910 U.S. Census showed Alice as having 15 children with 10 of them
still alive at the time. They were recorded as Family # 209 and living i n
Dewell # 208. George and Monroe worked as labors for the Cross Tie
Company.

The 1920 Census shows Alice Brown listed in SD #6, ED #20, on sheet #20 B
and line #95. She was a widower and listed as being 56 yrs the head of h ouse. There were three other people listed:Wade, C 22; Brown, Lesley o r Leroy 20,
Printece 14.

Alice was living in Chunchula, Mobile, AL with her spouse George Brown w hen she died on 8 Jan 1942. She was buried across the state line in Lu cedale, MS.
