Obituary for Mary Elam

Mary Anise Elam (nee Welch, known as Mary An) went to be with our Lord on December 16, 2015, in Jackson, MS. She was born in 1919 in Mississippi to Marion Mahala Duckworth Welch and William Estus Welch. She was the youngest of seven children and was especially close to her four sisters. She attended school in Laurel while her father was Jones County Sheriff.

She graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in Commerce. She thoroughly enjoyed working as secretary to the Math Department while she was a student at LSU. After graduation she moved in with her mother and sisters, who had relocated to Gulfport after the death of her father. She started work in Gulfport as secretary to Rupert Cook at Gulf Park and later worked at Mississippi Power Company, where she was an executive secretary to one of the vice presidents.

In 1949 she married William Clarence Elam, Jr. and after that devoted most of her time and energy to her family. She was a loving mother who created a caring home for her husband and three children and gave them much philosophical advice that provided a solid foundation for dealing with the world.

She and her husband were active in First United Methodist Church in Gulfport for over 50 years, where Mary An taught Sunday school and was a regular attendee at the Methodist Women Circle. She served as president of the Gulfport Business and Professional Women's Club, belonged to the Jaycettes, and was a founding member of the Gulfport Little Theater. She was active in GYC Ladies Auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi, and both Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. When her children grew older she worked for Jim True doing accounts and later for University of Georgia as a local Headstart tester and classroom observer.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses: William Timothy Elam and Gayle Ayers Elam; J. Chris Elam and Michael R. Parker; and Susan Anise E. Hawley and Mark S. Hawley; four grandchildren: Elisa Anise Hawley, Lauren Marie Hawley, Erika Marie Elam, and Mitchell Ayers Elam; as well as many, many nieces, nephews, and their descendants.

Most people who knew her described her as the nicest and kindest person they had ever known. She was welcoming and caring toward everyone and was loved by all she came into contact with.

Services will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in Gulfport at 12 o’clock in the afternoon with visitation one hour prior. Interment will be in Biloxi National Cemetery with her husband.

On October 26, 1945, a beautiful baby girl was born to Walter and Johnnie Lee Petties. Raised in Camden, Texas, Patricia affectionally known as Patsy, attended Camden Public Schools and received her academic diploma from Chester High School. As a child, Patsy was a member of the Lily Island Baptist church where she was baptized. Upon moving to Livingston from Camden, she became a member and church clerk for the Anderson Chapel Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Joseph Daniels.

In her matured years, Patsy met Jim Brown of Livingston, Tx. They later married and bore three exquisite children. After an agreed dissolution of marriage, Patsy continued to inspire and instill excellence in her three children with God’s unconditional love, words of wisdom and paramount care. Patsy also relished a livelihood that consisted of being a creative seamstress, an alteration extraordinaire, helping shoppers choose clothing and apparel at Weiner’s department store and 20+ years as a teacher’s aide for Livingston ISD from which she retired. Patsy loved to creatively clothe her children and travel the roads of East Texas, spending quality time with her family and friends and was an avid shopper.

On Wednesday December 11, 2019 Patsy received her heavenly robe with comfort and a smile.

Left to carry the torch of her legacy are: Two sons, (Cedric Brown (Marcie) of Lufkin, Texas and Kedric J. Brown of Houston, Texas), one daughter (Leah Brown of Houston, Texas). Three grand-daughters (Nikkita Brown of Beaumont, Texas, Aliyah Brown of Corrigan, Texas and Laila Taylor of Houston, Texas). Two grand -sons (Miles Brown of Beaumont Texas and Princeton Taylor of Houston, Texas). One great-grand-daughter (Haiden Crockett of Corrigan). Three sisters: Mattie Winston of Ft. Worth, Tx, Mary Petties of Houston, Tx and Cora Penrice of Camden, Tx. A host of nieces, nephews, near and distant relatives and friends.

Foregoing her in death are parents (Walter and Johnnie), three brothers (Milton Petties, Alonzo (Butch) Petties, Sam (Bo) Petties and Christopher Petties), and one sister (Gwendolyn Lyons).

Rachel at some point was also married to Timothy Luther Rogers 48145976. I believe she was his wife after his first wife and her sister, Sarah Elizabeth Duckworth b. 10/20/1825 who Timothy married 10/6/1848 in Covington Co., MS and fathered 5 children by Sarah. It appears that Rachel was 13 years younger than Sarah and Rachel was likely married to the Welch surname prior to marrying Timothy, or possibly after Timothy's death in 1902 since she is buried under the Welch name. Sarah died in 1864, possibly during childbirth - Infant Rogers was born August 1864 in Covington Co., MS, both likely died during the birth.
