Rachel at some point was also married to Timothy Luther Rogers 48145976. I believe she was his wife after his first wife and her sister, Sarah Elizabeth Duckworth b. 10/20/1825 who Timothy married 10/6/1848 in Covington Co., MS and fathered 5 children by Sarah. It appears that Rachel was 13 years younger than Sarah and Rachel was likely married to the Welch surname prior to marrying Timothy, or possibly after Timothy's death in 1902 since she is buried under the Welch name. Sarah died in 1864, possibly during childbirth - Infant Rogers was born August 1864 in Covington Co., MS, both likely died during the birth.

Soso native Jeanette Smith and her husband, the late Dr. C.E. Smith, were instrumental in propelling the civil rights movement in Hattiesburg in the late '50s and early '60s.

Both had served as president of the Forrest County NAACP, an organization they joined in 1959, and worked to make Hattiesburg a better place through their activism.

Jeanette Smith, 78, died May 27 in Atlanta.

A lifelong member of the Forrest County NAACP branch, she was known for her work through the national organization.

She continued to serve her community long after her husband's death in September 1986.

She was president from 1977-79 and again from 1992-94.

Related: Smiths were visionary civil rights leaders, Holloway writes

The former Jeanette Musgrove grew up in Soso, but moved to Hattiesburg in 1959 after she married one of the first black doctors to work at Forrest General Hospital.

"Both of them had got into the NAACP right around that period," said her son, Edwin Bradley "Brad" Smith. "They were a big part of the civil rights movement in the '60s - with the boycotting, the marching and things of that nature before integration."

The Smiths worked side by side throughout the civil rights era, and Brad Smith was one of the first black students to integrate Hattiesburg public schools in 1965.

The family lived on Breland Avenue, but Brad Smith was able to attend Woodley Elementary under the Freedom of Choice Act.

Brad Smith said many of the nation's civil rights leaders who came to Hattiesburg stayed at the Smith home, including Charles Evers and Martin Luther King Jr.

"A lot of those people were in and out of our house," Brad Smith said.

According to an earlier Hattiesburg American story, shots were fired into the Smiths' home around 3 a.m. Feb. 20, 1968.

"One of those bullets came close to hitting my head," Brad Smith said.

Jeanette Smith met her husband, a family practitioner who grew up in Memphis and moved to Hattiesburg with his friend Dr. Douglas L. Parris, a Hattiesburg native, after finishing medical school in Nashville.

The couple had three children: Brad Smith of Houston and two daughters, Jeanine Smith and Marcia Smith Truitt, both of the Atlanta area. She was grandmother to three: Julio Fuentes and Christina Smith, both of Houston, and Kelsie Truitt of Atlanta.

Jeanette Smith served on the NAACP's education committee, and worked to inform voters on the latest issues and candidates.

During her tenure as president and through her recruitment and retention efforts, the Forrest County NAACP chapter reached the highest membership numbers to that time.

Her son said the family's phone was always ringing, with someone needing help or questions answered or guidance on a problem.

"Growing up we knew we had to share her with everybody," Brad Smith said. "We just understood we had to accept that's who she was. But we were so proud of her.

"She was a very Christian person. ... She was a true Christian soldier."

Jeanette Smith was a longtime property manager at the Francis Street Apartments, where she also mentored some of the young residents, Brad Smith said.

She was elected in 1992 to serve one term on the Forrest County Election Commission, from 1993-97.

Even after her retirement from managing the apartments, Jeanette Smith stayed active in the NAACP and community events, her son said, and received many awards for her work to improve the civil rights of all citizens.

She chaired the Life Membership and originated the Golden Heritage Membership of the state chapter of the NAACP.

"I am reminded of her championing the causes of the under-served people of our community, with strong articulation about needs that would improve their economic and social status," wrote Eddie Holloway, dean of students and assistant vice president for Student Affairs at the University of Southern Mississippi.

She also was involved in neighborhood watch programs in her neighborhood.

"She was a true pillar of the community for sure in so many ways," Brad Smith said. "She loved this community so much.

"She was so instrumental in the fight for rights of this community - whatever your color, race, creed, religion … anyone who was abused by the system she would stand up for them and their civil rights."

Funeral arrangements

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Soso. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg. Young's Funeral Home of Taylorsville is in charge of arrangements.

TEXLA, TEXAS. Texla is at the junction of State Highway 62 and Farm Roa d
2802, twenty miles northeast of Beaumont in northern Orange County. The
first post office, established in 1905, was named Bruce, after postmast er
Charles G. Bruce. By that time the Harrell-Votaw Lumber Company had
established a sawmill at the site, on the Orange and Northwestern Railw ay.
In 1906 the R. W. Wier Lumber Company purchased the mill and changed th e
name of the post office to Texla, for its proximity to Louisiana. Sever al
firms, including the Orange Lumber Company and the Peavy-Moore Lumber
Company, operated sawmills there between the 1910 and 1929. The communi ty
had a peak population of some 600. Eventually, however, the depletion o f
local timber led operators to abandon the site; Peavy-Moore sold its
remaining buildings at Texla in 1929. The post office closed the same
year. Scattered buildings and residences marked the area in 1975, when
most services were located at nearby Mauriceville.

Tribute/Obituary:

******* " I Have Moved ..." *******

This is a notice of my Address Change .....

I want you to know that I have moved.
I recieved a call
from my Heavenly Father ,
the Chief Architect, who
informed me that my new home was ready
and that I could
move immediately.......

You all know ,that I have been sending up my timbers, Packing Up Getting Ready To Go, But there was some minor finishing touches on some of my timbers that only the
chief Carpenter, Jesus could do.
Some were a little to broad, thick or just not long enough.
" Meaning when I got a little sick."
Jesus had to fix it....
Well, my new home is finished now;
it's such a beautiful,
sight to behold. It is located in an,
exclusive estate !!!
and it sits behind a Pearly Gate, totally unlike my earthly home, its located just off a serene, celestial shore. Of Course, the street are paved of Gold ....
not at all like West Goliad, not at all......

Every day is Sunday Here....
" I have been told."
My foot is okay, I'm Walking now....
" I just Walk around Heaven All Day...."

I have lived in several new places before,
I came from Greenwood, Mississippi
when I was a just a child , 2 years old.....
became the mother of;
13 children , blended family of 7 children, lived in Crockett, Texas for a long, long time, Now I must move, But this new home that was prepared for me is like none other.
There is Peace, Peace, Peace ....
joy and happiness here with no worries, no more disappointments, No more Pain to bear, No strife or discontent, there is only sweet, sweet, Serenity everywhere.... I could go on and on about my new home,
but I just got called to get fitted for
my long white robe, and my golden slippers.

I leave behind a great legacy, 13 children,
7 stepchildren
69 grandchildren, 87 great grands,
18 great- great grandchildren.

Let me give you my new address;
Lula Mae Leonard
111 Hallelujah Boulevard
Godtown, Heaven 777

I never had a cell phone , I don't even have a telephone. I don't have a number, but I am listed in the
Good Book, on every page.

Hope to see you there!!!!
I love you All.....
Mrs. Lula Mae Leonard
