William Lewis was born in 1889 along with a twin sister, Lena, to Eugene and Odelia Thomas-Lewis.
According to his brother, Wilton, William served in France with the Co E 806 Pioneer Infantry Regiment during World War I. While in combat, he received injuries from mustard gas attacks. Uncle William served in the Army from 20 Jun 1918 - 23 Jul 1919 and received an honorable discharge upon leaving the service.
In the 1930 U.S. Census for Elton, LA, he is listed under his mother's household as Eugene Lewis and worked as a waiter in a coffee shop.
During the 1940s, Uncle William worked in Beaumont, TX, at a shipyard. According to Cousin AD Chatmon, he died on 17 Feb 1946 at the VA Hospital in Alexandria, LA. On 22 Feb 1946, his wife, Mary, who was living at 1081 Gladys St. in Beaumont, applied for a military upright marble headstone for Uncle William's grave. The monument was placed on Uncle William's grave in Anthony Cemetery in Beaumont, TX.
