A snap shot of the US Army Roll of Prisoners of War Record showing Hiram Washington Powell

On 4 Jul 1863, about 30,000 Confederate soldiers surrendered at Vicksburg, thereby, ending the 47 days Siege of Vicksburg, MS during the Civil War. This page, of the Roll of Prisoners of War, lists Hiram at #162. In addition, it records several other local soldiers from Jones County and other nearby communities as members of his unit, Company C of the 7th Battalion, Mississippi Infantry.

While fighting for the Confederacy, I wonder if he knew of his wife's death as a result of starvation and the circumstances surrounding it (some attribute it to the Confederates confiscation of personal property and a punitive and regressive tax system on farmers) some six months earlier? War is hell and so is the price that's paid.
